Aperitifs with Gentian

GENCIAN BASED APERITIFS

This plant is strongly bitter from the root to the leaves, but the bitter components present in its roots - gentiopicroside and amarogentin - are the source of the extreme bitterness of the gentian.

This plant has been around for a long time;
According to the encyclopedia of natural history written by Pliny the Elder, the gentian has been used due to its medicinal virtues since the time of the king of the Balkans, Gentius (and thus has his name), who ruled from 180 to 168 B.C. and who was the last king of Illira.

The gentian is present in wine and liqueur-based aperitifs, including Suze, Bonal, Amer Picon and others.

It is also present at Campari, Angostura Bitters and other bitter drinks.
